Suzuki Jimny JB74

JB74 is the chassis code for the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny — the 1.5-litre one built from 2018. If you have been reading forums or owners’ groups, this is the number everyone uses.

What the code means

Suzuki designates Jimny generations by chassis code rather than a marketing name. The current car is JB74 for the 1.5-litre petrol model. You will also see JB64, which is the 660cc kei-class version sold in Japan and not offered here.

So a UK Jimny — or a UK-registered import — is a JB74. If a listing says JB64, it is a kei car, and that is a different vehicle with a much smaller engine.

The five-door Nomad shares the same generation and running gear on a longer wheelbase. Some markets designate it JC74.

Why people search for it rather than “Jimny”

Because it is precise. “Suzuki Jimny” covers everything back to the 1970s SJ. JB74 means the current shape, the 1.5 engine, ALLGRIP PRO with low range, and the modern safety kit — with no ambiguity.

The aftermarket has settled on it too. Wheels, lift kits, snorkels, arches and bumpers are catalogued by chassis code, so if you are buying parts you will be shopping by JB74 whether you meant to or not.

JB74 in the UK: the awkward part

The JB74 was sold here as a passenger car until 2020, when emissions rules ended official UK supply. A newer factory four-seat JB74 is therefore normally a Japanese-market import, prepared and registered for use in Britain.
