Suzuki Jimny vs Ineos Grenadier

Reviewed by the Castle Motors team · Updated 28 August 2026

Both are unfashionably honest ladder-frame 4x4s with live axles. They are otherwise almost nothing alike.

Size and price

The Grenadier is a large, heavy, expensive vehicle with a BMW straight-six. The Jimny is a small, light, comparatively cheap one with a 1.5-litre four. The Grenadier costs several times what a Jimny does.

If your shortlist genuinely contains both, something has gone wrong in defining the requirement — they answer different questions.

Where the Grenadier is better

The real decision

Ask what proportion of your driving is the difficult bit. If it is a small fraction and the rest is motorway, the Grenadier’s comfort earns its cost. If the difficult bit is narrow, muddy and local — which describes most UK off-road driving — the Jimny is not the compromise choice. It is the right tool.

Castle Motors stocks Land Rover Defenders alongside Jimnys, so we see buyers move between these categories regularly. The ones who end up happiest are those who were honest about the motorway miles.
